Filmed in what looks like the Dales and Malham Tarn, the film has some similarities in the plot line to the much later American film. The story is about the Wakefield Wheelers and contains careless motorists, bike theft, cycle racing, cycling club committee meetings and illegal gambling. The film stars Honor Blackman, Diana Dors and Anthony Newly, all of whom were very young and yet to reach their later stardom. The cast is also peppered with many other familiar British actors, well to anyone over 55 that is! Warning: Contains Northern accents and was made in a county containing Whippets.

The lives of the members of a West Yorkshire cycling club are complicated by romantic entanglements and a series of bike thefts. Who could possibly have imagined that the world of Yorkshire cycling clubs could contain more skullduggery and criminal activity than the Tour de France? Ok, perhaps not more, but a surprising amount nonetheless.

Set against the backdrop of the Yorkshire Dales, this is the story of the members of the Wakeford Wheelers and you get it all. There's romance with two men fighting over Honor Blackman while Diana Dors is throwing herself at all and sundry to surprisingly little effect. There's criminal activity with a young Anthony Newley at it's centre, with illegal betting and bicycle theivery.

And there's the mysterious newcomer who makes his mark on the club and yet seems to be hiding a deep, dark secret. We're deep in the Calder Valley in Yorkshire for this well-cast minor drama which has boys, girls and bikes a-plenty, skullduggery, a cycle race, a tearaway teen, and the problems behind closed doors in Northern back rooms.

Honor Blackman shines as Susie, a cyclist and mill worker who has a hard-working boyfriend Patrick Holt but who is dazzled a bit by an incoming moneyed car driver John McCallum.

Diana Dors flirts with everything that moves, Anthony Newley - when he's not showing off his dance moves - gets involved in nicking money from his mum's Megs Jenkins Wakes club collection and in a gambling fracas with a father and son combo Maurine Denham and John Blythe.

Shot in glorious Calderdale, A Boy, a Girl and a Bike tells the story of a Yorkshire cycling club whose alumni include two staggering beauties in the shape of Honor Blackman and Diana Dors. It's Blackman's wholesome mill girl Sue who is the object of affection for both the humble Sam Patrick Holt and well-off newcomer David John McCallum , whilst a touch of skulduggery plays around the periphery of the plot thanks to young tearaway Anthony Newley being manipulated into thieving bikes by unscrupulous father and son garage owners Maurice Denham and John Blythe.

Ralph Smart directs this romantic comedy in which two members of a cycling club fall in love with each other until a rich man enters the scene. The story concerns the introduction of a fresh associate which strains wariness in a bicycling club in Yorkshire, England. Charming 90 min soap opera set among the characters of a Yorkshire cycle club. Romance, class, crime, 'that London' and some cracking detail about fluted cranks and a distinctive foreign brake-cable arrangement. Sporadically charming but messily plotted and clumsily made comedy about a West Yorkshire cycling club rocked by the emergence of a love triangle, the theft of a bike, and the comeuppance of a camera-shy star cyclist.

As i always seem to be saying it needed more Thora Hird. And what sort of an ending was that? The torrid world of Northern bicycle clubs comes under the unflinching gaze of director Ralph Smart with some vigour for a good hour and 25 minutes.

Then, suddenly, it just can't be arsed to pedal any further and wraps up one plot strand with unseemly haste while leaving another dangling.

At least the interesting cast and breezy tone keeps it watchable. A bit of fluff, but a fascinating one and always great to see the Calder Valley before us lot started pouring in.

Text size: A A A. About the BFI. Press releases and media enquiries.

Coming across a local road cycling club practising on the winding, hilly roads around their town, well-to-do car driver David is perplexed as to why anyone would wish to hurl themselves around on these two-wheeled contraptions. However, his interest is piqued when he notices a pretty blonde member of the group, Susie, and - after some initial blundering - he quickly becomes more intrigued by the cycling world. They are joined by regular hangers-on in the form of Ginger; Ada; Nan's son, Charlie; and assisted by black-market bookmaker and local cycle shop proprietor Bill Martin and his son, Frankie. Having purchased an old bike from the Martins David is soon out on the roads himself, and the club members soon realise he's actually capable of a fair pace. Signing him up as a backup rider for their racing team, they begin training for some important upcoming events. It's not long, however, before his friendship with Susie is causing ructions between her and Sam, who're struggling already with a search for a home of their own.

Romantic complications ensue when wealthy David John McCallum becomes smitten with Sue, and joins the club to pursue her, much to Sam's dismay. The Radio Times gave the film two out of five stars, calling it, "A minor, good-natured British comedy romance. From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. A Boy, a Girl and a Bike British quad poster. In this film she is beautiful, intelligent and altogether devastating. She still looks pretty good in her more recent appearances at 80 and beyond — see the numerous tributes on YouTube. The title of the film follows the Ronseal advert and offers what it says on the tin, though there are several girls, several boys and a lot of bikes.
