Where would be the best place in the Sedona area to view a sunset? Have heard the airprt mesa is good First choice would be my front yard.

Second choice would be the noll on Airport Rd. He'll set up his camera pointing away from the setting sun and he'll be shooting Munds rocks and all the the views to the east as the sunlight lights them up. Last night as we were driving to the country club for dinner, we observed several hikers high on Bell Rock , all apparently waiting for the sun to set.

We laughed because 1 they were looking in the wrong direction and their view of the Chapel and the Nuns and Courthouse Butte were all blocked by their position on Bell Rock. They were missing the show and 2 they obviously didn't realize that when the sun sets, it gets VERY dark, and so they were bound to be facing an uncomfortable and dangerous walk down off of Bell Rock after the sun's light would no longer be there to guide them.

Is this within walking distance of Sky Ranch Lodge? Yes, you could walk it, but the road is narrow and there tends to be a lot of traffic at that hour. You'll be familiar with it once you first arrive at the SRL, so you can decide.

Is it easy to find? Yes, it's easy to find, and yes, there is parking there although it is somewhat limited and it does require a Red Rock Pass. There is room for probably vehicles. Then you'll need to hike up the noll. It will take you about minutes. Easy but steep. Take your time and be careful. If you're uncomfortable with the climb, you can also get excellent views from the base of the noll. This is an access area to the loop trail that goes all the way around the airport mesa.

And yes it is different and IMHO a better place to be for sunset than on top of the mesa at the overlook. We will be staying at the Hilton. I do not have any clue if the Hilton is near the airport or in the other direction. Should we head out to the airport for the sunset shots or is there a great place around the Hilton?

We would like to set up the tripod and take some good shots. The Hilton is about 8 miles away from the Airport Mesa. As the sun sets, these vistas will light up and become spectacular subjects for your sunset photos.

I often find myself driving south on Hwy toward the Village at that time of day and I'm always awed by the beauty of the setting sun on those rocks. Mind you, from where I am, I can't even see the sun itself, but that doesn't matter.

It's all about what the sun's light is doing to what it shines on. Kind of like what God does as He shines his light on us. We can't see Him, but His light is reflected in us all. Then I have to watch out for tourists in the cars in front of me, who are similarly impressed and have a sudden urge to stop in the middle of the highway. Very dangerous. Enjoy the sunset from your patio at the Hilton. It will far less crowded and much more romantic and meaningful.

Thank you for your advice. I have never read such a beautiful response on a forum! I cannot wait until we arrive in Sedona. I guess we picked a great hotel for our pictures.
