I am going to take my parents to visit Yellowstone Park in October this year. How many days do I need? Just for well known spots. Do you think we should drive by ourselves? Or there is local organized trip. We are not really outdoor person. Don't know how to deal with wild animals. You are aware by October the weather has turned much colder. It can be cool and nice or a blizzard. It quickly gets worse as the month goes along. The tours by Xanterra will of shut down and many of the outside tour providers.

Most people tour the park themselves. The road between Canyon and Tower will close for the season October The road between Mammoth and Norris will be closed from September 10 to October 6 for construction. October is a bit late for visiting the park, particularly if you plan to stay in the park unless you have reservations made already.

Be aware that you could very well have snow during this time period. Where do you plan to fly into as that would make a difference as to how many days I would recommend. I would say 5 days minimum that way you aren't rushed.

But I would also plan to head south to Grand Teton National Park as the mountains are some of my favorite and it would be ashame to come all that way and miss it. When you are trying to make reservations, I would call while having the YNP map up on your computer so you can see where accommodations might be for what nights. If I couldn't get into Mammoth then I would consider staying in Canyon. Personally, if you don't have reservations made already for your accommodations, I would put this trip off until next fall and come mid-September when more is open.

On the wild animal part, most, but not all of our encounters were while in the car. You just need to keep your eyes on the road, be prepared to stop, and pull over if you want pictures. For outside of the car , follow the safe distances posted by the park!! Watch the video at the bear spray rental places, be very aware of your surroundings when outside your vehicle. My dad almost got run over by a buffalo when it took off running from behind a restroom, down the side.

He wasn't paying attention! Whenever you go enjoy it!! I loved it so much, we're going back next year!! Thank you very much for sharing. I need to reconsider my trip. I read on internet mentioned October would be the best time to visit. Obviously, it is not.

Thanks again. Very much appreciated. September is a good month, but again weather can change. Definitely a park worth visiting in the USA. This topic has been closed to new posts due to inactivity. The truth is, statistically, most people see a portion of the park in one or two day visits while they are in transit — that is, coming and going to some other destination, for example coming from Grand Teton National Park on the way to Glacier National Park, or coming from Denver on the way to Seattle.
