Going to Meet the Man - Going to Meet the Man Summary & Analysis

James Baldwin 's anthology of stories " Going to Meet the Man " explores the lives of characters living in or otherwise connected to the American South. Some of the characters live in New York City, or in the case of the one celebrity protagonist, have fled the United States to live in France. But for all of these characters, we see that America, according to Baldwin, is entirely unsafe and nearly unlivable for a black person.

When he was three years old, his mother married David Baldwin, a deeply religious preacher. James Baldwin lived most of his adult life in France. When he died of cancer in , he left behind a legacy that was manifold.

The novel begins with the man and boy in the woods, the boy asleep, as the two of them are making their journey along the road. The story is set in a post-apocalyptic world, date and place unnamed, though the reader can assume it's somewhere in what was the United States because the man tells the boy that they're walking the "state roads. Stylistically, the writing is very fragmented and sparse from the beginning, which reflects the barren and bleak landscape through which the man and boy are traveling. McCarthy also chooses to use no quotation marks in dialogue and for some contractions, he leaves out the apostrophes. Because this is a post-apocalyptic story, the exemption of these punctuation elements might serve as a way for McCarthy to indicate that in this new world, remnants of the old world — like electricity, running water, and humanity — no longer exist, or they exist in very limited amounts.

Lieutenant Martin, who believes the Man has come and chooses to side with the planet's people. The main theme is the role of faith in gaining redemption. The Man is what the Judeo-Christian faiths would term the Messiah or Savior, but Bradbury opts to make this a broader, explicitly stating that this figure exists in many cultures and goes by many names. What the Man brings, however, is a sense of peace and happiness that is akin to what the Judeo-Christian faiths would call redemption - that is, a forgiveness of sins and a more enlightened way of life.

For many individuals, the relationships that exist between family members are the strongest and most influential human connections that the person will ever experience within his or her lifetime. These bonds, formed in early psychosocial development, have the potential to permanently define how a person views his or her world. Often, children hold fast to the values and social stigmas that sprout from early family interactions and relationships for the remainder of their lives, regardless of whether the values go against the true moral norm or not. However, even within the confines of these tight family bonds, free thinking can be achieved and it is possible for a person to break free from recycled family values.
