A slew of female-led detective shows are due to grace our screens this year, including The Body Farm, a spin-off from Waking the Dead. But these shows will be following in the footsteps of some iconic female investigators. Here is my top 10 list of female characters who broke boundaries and helped redefine the image of the investigator. Who would be on your list?

Deconstructing Dads: Changing Images of Fathers in Popular Culture is an interdisciplinary edited collection of essays authored by prominent scholars in the fields of media, sociology, and cultural studies who address how media represent the image of the father in popular culture. Each chapter of this book focuses on a different aspect of media, including how advertising creates expectations of play and father, crime shows and the new hero father, and men as paternal figures in horror films.

The book also explores changing definitions of fatherhood by looking at such subjects as how the media represents sperm donation as complicating the definition of father and how specific groups have been represented as fathers, including gay men as dads and Latino fathers in film. Best British Female Centric Detective Shows: Gritty, Independent, Surprisingly Strong

With sequels, prequels, remakes, spin-offs, or copies of successful films or franchises dominating film and television production, it sometimes seems as if Hollywood is incapable of making an original film or TV show. These textual pluralities or multiplicities—while loved by fans who flock to them in droves—tend to be dismissed by critics and scholars as markers of the death of high culture. I admit to watching a good deal of television. Mysteries are one of my favorite genres followed by sweeping epic and historical melodramas. If you love crime TV genre, especially British shows, you know there are plenty of dedicated, strong women characters who make up part of the crime solving teams. But for those who want to see women take the helm, here is a short list of some of the best ones to watch. Some I have discovered on Netflix, some on PBS, and others through Amazon, but in my present addiction to British style detective series I have found the women characters to be some of the most fascinating. There is a wide range of subject matter, and the range is from gritty to humorous, but the entertainment value is always top notch. She is something like your mum, and plays that maternal side to get to the bottom of even the most difficult cases. It doesn't hurt at all that DS Joe Ashworth, her sergeant, is so dishy.
